Phish Superball IX Festival

Phish Superball IX was Phish's ninth festival and it was the social event of the season for Jack and I. Unlike most music festivals, with several stages featuring more music than you can ever see performed, there was a casual, relaxed vibe that prevailed throughout the weekend in Watkins Glen, NY. Phish was the only act on the playbill this 4th of July weekend and they performed only 8 sets including an unannounced late night psychedelic jam session that rivaled some of Pink Floyd's early work. Other than that the day was spent cooking, camping and visiting with family and friends plus chatting with interesting people and making new friends.
The weekend in Watkins Glen promised to be fantastic and it delivered. The Phish staff at the festival was very friendly and went out of their way to smooth out problems and make us feel like guests, but the police and fire department presence at Phish IX was too much. The mounties can handle things and call the officials in if needed, they don't need to drive around and around creating more dust. The weather was quite nice with a passing rain shower one morning while most festival goers were sleeping.
We were in the Glen Close Campground at Superball IX which was considerably closer to the stage than the general camping area where we actually spent most of our time in between music sets. The problem for us was that the 2 camps were separated by the main concert grounds which meant extra walking if you wanted to hookup with friends in general camping and that sucked. Then if you wanted to take anything over to the other camping area it was even worse, you had to walk all the way around the entire race track, which was miles. Overall we'd have been better off in the general camping area. Thank goodness they let me ride the electric bike around. The renegade shakedown took a while to come together, but once it did they raged it thank goodness. I like the Renegade Shakedown St. They are such an important part of it for many customers like me. It adds a necessary element to the scene. I would really miss some of the products and services. If they got greedy and didn't allow a renegade shakedown any longer, I would not be going to nearly as many Phish shows for sure. It just wouldn't be the same without that part of the family, you know?
Phish was sounding good this weekend too! The stage was weird, very tall and skinny with a nice sized column and a half of speakers hung from each side. It was fairly loud but could have had stronger bass. If I was Phish I'd insist on more bass. With Bass Nectar, Pretty Lights & Girl Talk so popular it's obvious that the fans want xtra bass so why not take it up a notch? Noticeably absent however were the typical video monitors on each side of the stage. It was difficult to get a look at Phish performing the music because there was no slope to the main field. Video monitors would have been appropriate at this location. Phish has been looking and sounding awesome lately with what appears to be new lights and speakers, just double the bass and were there! Fans came to have fun with glow sticks as big glow stick wars broke out on several occasions in the concert crowd.
I'm sure Phish is always looking for fresh ideas, so here's something new and different. How about an ice cream social at the next festival? I'm sure you can pal-up with Ben & Jerry's who was giving away free ice cream at Phish's Superball IX all weekend anyway and hand out Phish Food Ice Cream to concert goers while they mingle around and listen to Phish performing an afternoon set of something appropriate for the moment. I believe an ice cream social would be the talk of the town!
It was so wonderful to see Phish family and friends again, at times it was like a reunion. I just wonder how "twinkle trees" (Electric Forest) went. Wish they were on different weekends, I would have loved to have gone to both festivals.

Long Haul

Trip Log 15,000 miles. We have just crossed the halfway point for our goal of the summer of driving over 30,000 miles in a summer. Leaving Telluride last night right after the show was the only way to make it to Deer Creek in time to get a good spot on Shakedown.  From downtown Telluride, it's 1,402 miles and about a 26 hour drive. We have driven non-stop except for gas and food all the way across most of the country today. We have about 460 miles to go before we make it all the way to Noblesville Indiana. Deer Creek has always been a very chill scene and there is a camp-ground that is off the hook for the late night partying in between the two nights coming up tomorrow and Friday. We are driving through Iowa and there is a lot of flooding. I have never seen houses and barns flooded like that.

It was a crazy thunderstorm last year for the Deer Creek Phish show. The lightning was exploding into the sky at what almost seemed like they somehow timed the strikes with the music. The storm got so intense they told everyone that was not under the Pavilion to go seek shelter in their cars for set-break.  It ended up being almost two hours later when they let everyone go back in the show.

I am excited to have 2 nights in Deer Creek this year. It should be even more fun than last year with the campground party in-between the shows.

Buying Phish Tickets

I ask you, does life get any better than this? I'm sitting here watching TPIR with Drew and attempting to buy Phish Tickets online for the upcoming 2010 Phish Summer Tour. And talk about buying Phish Tickets, we got lucky and snagged many of the hard to get tickets, we now have tickets for 20 of the 29 Phish Tour Dates this summer. We somehow snagged 2 tickets for Phish Thursday Aug 5th and 2 Tickets for Friday's Phish Concert at the Greek Theatre, San Francisco in Berkley right off of Ticketmaster when the went on sale. Buy Phish Tickets from StubHub!Then Jacks nimble fingers on the capthca word puzzle scored us 2 Telluride Phish tickets with Camping for 2 in Telluride Town Park. I have no idea how he lucked out with those Telluride Tickets because the competition was extremely fierce. We also purchased pavilion tickets for a bunch of other shows like Deer Creek, Camden, Charlotte, NC to name a few.

You know what all this Phish ticket talk means? We are going to doing a ton of traveling and blogging this summer, sharing all the action with pictures and videos from the Phish concerts, shakedown street and the road whenever possible. Last year we drove 30,000 miles and this year is shaping up nicely, we were really lucky buying Phish tickets this year.

While we are on the subject, I wonder why we were able to buy such good Phish tickets online from Ticketmaster this year, could it have anything to do with the big bust? The fed's busted a ring of lowlife ticket scalpers that were snapping up all the choice tickets to not only our phish concerts, but all prime music and sports event too. Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen and Trent Reznor of NIN were instrumental in bringing attention to the problem last year and apparently someone was listening. I hope they throw the book at em', scumbag's.

Phish Summer Tour 2010

Phish 8 Acoustic Set
Today Phish announced their 2010 summer tour and I think it looks awesome! I'm thrilled to see so many 2 night Phish gigs too. It is so much nicer, and I believe safer when the Phish entourage of followers spends a couple of nights in one location, instead of relentless driving, so Kudos goes out to the Phish team for some really good choices. Totally looking forward to the Telluride Phish Concerts. I saw the Grateful Dead in Telluride back in the day, it's going to be a blast.

I'm hoping Phish tour fills in a little with saaaaaay a 3-Night run on August, 1st, 2nd, & 3rd at The Gorge in WA? My fingers are crossed, as that was my favorite Concert stop on Phish Summer Tour 2009!!! I won't be disappointed if they skip Red Rocks, they could have been a considerably nicer, friendlier host in Denver last summer for Phish's four night run there. Besides I'll be catching SCI there July 23rd, 24th & 25th!

Phish ticketsSO, a limited number of tickets for the upcoming Phish Summer Tour 2010 shows are now being offered through the Phish secure online ticketing system via a ticket request period. But hurry, the 10 day request time ends: Friday, March 26 at 11:59 PM, EDT. and then your cast out to the wolves to scrap for any remaining tickets.

Phish 8 Festival Photos

We are celebrating Halloween weekend at the Phish festival in Indio, CA. I will be posting fresh, new Phish 8 festival photos and short video clips here all weekend, so stay tuned I guarantee you it will be curious, interesting and quite possibly rather bizzare at times, but always entertaining.
Why is Trey Anastasio smiling?

He just hinted while going into the song David Bowie that Phish is covering David Bowie's Hunky Dory at the Phish 8 festival in CA or are they? Jake and Heather insist they are covering the Rolling Stones, they say "the horns are hired". (Disclaimer: I've been wrong before.)

The sunsets over Hunky Dory campground at Phish 8. We are camped in Hunky Dory Campground.

The Balloon light show over the Phish audience.

Phish live video clip at Phish 8, Indio performing Wolfman's Brother in HD.

Phish is really running a nice festival so far, very pleased with the weather, facility, vibe of the staff, security, even the cops are unusually friendly and nice here this weekend. This will go down as another EPIC Phish festival.

Phish The Gorge Washington

The Gorge was the best stop on Phish tour summer 2009. The weather was perfect and the music was outstanding, even the campground was a great time. Hope you enjoy the photos from The Gorge, WA.

Rustic Sicilian Cuisine was there.

Pat, The Ragin' Kajun and his tasty Fajitas

Security at The Gorge looked really mean but as long as you were not too out of line they were a fine host. We hooked them up with comp beverages all weekend.

Kristen & Adam have the best food on the lot. Note the fresh-up Pizzadilla on the griddle, a cross between a pizza and a quesadilla, perfect when you've go the munchies.

When your hungry try their Jerk Chicken Wrap it's awesome. I'm craving one right about now. Eatin' livin' and lovin' it!

I love the car camping at the Gorge Campground.

Somebody brought a real live marijuana plant to the Shoreline Phish lot. I'm not kidding, it was a big bushy marijuana plant sitting in the middle of Shakedown St. like it was no big deal, The cops walked by it several times and never even gave it a second glance, I'm not Bull shittn' you!
