The largest of four National forests in NC and encompassing over 1/2 million acres the Nantahala National Forest features Lone Bald Mountain towering over a mile above sea level at 5800 feet, scenic rivers and creeks with gorgeous waterfalls that present wonderful photographic opportunities. It's also a popular destination with tourists offering many recreational activities for visitors to participate in. is a Cherokee Indian word meaning "land of the noon day sun" because the river gorge is so deep sun only shines there mid-day.
